If there is one politician in the entire country of Canada whom I actually respect, than it surely must be Ujjal Dosanjh.
Dosanjh cut his teeth as a private citizen by getting into fights with Sikh fundamentalists; he entered politics and ascended (abortively) to the rank of Premier of British Columbia, although he failed to be elected, mostly due to the unpopularity of his party. Once out of office, he crossed the floor and ran federally as a member of the Liberal Party, winning his seat in 2004 and becoming (again abortively) Minister of Health under Paul Martin. He held out as an opposition member after the Liberals lost office in 2006, but this didn’t stop him from speaking out publicly against Nicolas Sarkozy’s shameful treatment of the Roma in France.
Unfortunately, he lost his seat during the rout of the Liberal Party in 2011, but one could hardly expect this to shut him up.
Now, he has once again shown himself to be the only political figure in this country with a spine. Tweeting on the subject of rape in India and elsewhere, he wrote:
Absurd 2blame female dress 4 rape. If men unable 2control penises, they shud have them removed
Now of course, Dosanjh hastens to point-out that he’s not actually in favour of compulsory penectomies for rapists, and frankly I think that anyone who reads that in to this statement probably doesn’t have great reading comprehension. Still, though, it is refreshing to see a public figure willing to just come-out and say in such blatant terms what should be fucking obvious.
Now, if only he could be coaxed into running for head of the federal Liberal Party, maybe I might start to care about them again.
